Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese visits hospitalized Bondi hero Ahmed Ahmed


Australia’s prime minister visited Bondi hero Ahmed Ahmed in hospital after bystanders tried to disarm a gunman in the country’s worst shooting since 1996.

“You have a strong heart,” Prime Minister Anthony Albanese told the father-of-two, later calling him “the best man in our country.”

The fruit shop owner, who was born and raised in Syria, was shot several times in the shoulder after fighting an alleged gunman. Mr Albanese said Mr Ahmed would “undergo further surgery” on Wednesday.

At least 15 people have been confirmed dead in an attack on Sunday at an event marking the first night of Hanukkah in Sydney.

Police declared the attack a terrorist incident against the Jewish community.

“He was trying to get a cup of coffee when someone was shot in front of him,” Albanese said after a bedside visit.

“He decided to take action and his bravery was an inspiration to all Australians. He was a very humble man.”

The prime minister added: “He stands as an example of human strength at a time when we are witnessing evil unfold.”

“We are a brave nation. Ahmed Ahmed represents the best of our country.”

He later added: “Ahmed, you are an Australian hero.”

The 43-year-old has received nationwide support, including US President Donald Trump praising his courage and a US billionaire donating $99,999 ($65,000; £49,000) to Mr Ahmed, calling him a “brave hero”.

In the video, Mr Ahmed hides behind a parked car before jumping out.

He rushed toward the suspected shooter and grabbed his weapon, then turned the gun on him. The suspected attacker then began to retreat.

Ahmed then lowered his weapon and raised one hand in the air, appearing to indicate to police that he was not one of the attackers.
