Two buildings collapsed in the Moroccan city of Fez, killing at least 22 people and injuring 16 others.
Eight families were inside two four-story residential buildings that collapsed early Wednesday morning, state media said, citing local officials.
Several Moroccan news outlets reported that the buildings, located in the suburb of Almasirah in the southwestern part of the city’s new district, have shown signs of age over the years.
Fes, located in northeastern Morocco, is one of the oldest cities in the North African country, with parts dating back to the eighth century. It is also the third most populous city in the country.
Search and rescue operations are underway to find people who may still be trapped under the rubble. Video from the scene showed people and excavators sifting through the rubble under cover of darkness.
In a video posted by news website Akhbarona, a body can be seen being carried away on a stretcher by emergency services.
Residents of nearby buildings were evacuated as a precaution, state media reported.
Those taken to the hospital suffered varying degrees of injuries.
In May, nine people died when an abandoned building collapsed in another neighborhood of Fez.
Previously, in February 2024, a house collapsed due to heavy rain and strong winds in the old city, killing five people.
