Frank Gehry, considered one of the most influential architects of this century, has died aged 96.
Gehry is known for his avant-garde, experimental architectural style. He became famous in 1997 with his titanium-covered design for the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, Spain.
He established his reputation for boldness a few years ago when he redesigned his home in Santa Monica, Calif., using materials such as chain-link fencing, plywood and corrugated steel.
“Gary is survived by his two daughters from his first marriage, Leslie and Briana, his wife Berta Isabel Aguilera, and their two sons Alejandro and Samuel,” his chief of staff Megan Lloyd told the BBC on Friday.
Gehry was born in Toronto in 1929 and moved to Los Angeles as a teenager to study architecture at the University of Southern California.
After founding his own firm, he broke with traditional architectural principles of symmetry, using unconventional shapes and materials in a style now known as deconstruction.
His work in Bilbao put him in high demand, and he went on to design iconic buildings in cities around the world: the Jay Pritzker Pavilion in Chicago’s Millennium Park, the Gehry Tower in Germany, and the Fondation Louis Vuitton in Paris.
