Anthropic has filed documents to create a new political action committee – a sign that, like its peers, the AI lab is taking important steps to improve policy and regulation.
AnthropPAC plans to make donations to both parties during the midterms, including D.C. lawmakers and political upstarts. The PAC will be supported by voluntary contributions of up to $5,000, Bloomberg reports. A organizational structure the filing by the Federal Election Commission includes the signature of Allison Rossi, Anthropic’s treasurer. TechCrunch reached out to Anthropic for more information.
AI companies, both peers and competitors in the new and often turbulent industry, have been eager to push policies they like in government and government. The Washington Post report last month the AI industry had already donated $185 million in mid-level competitions. In February, The New York Times also report on Public First, a new Super PAC that has reportedly received at least $20 million in donations from Anthropic, and that has funded ad campaigns that help control other issues.
Anthropic’s political work has grown as the company continues to be involved in a vicious legal battle and the Department of Defense. Controversy arose earlier this year over the government’s use of anthropic forms of AI and what guidelines (if any) should exist for its use.
