previous America’s Next Top Model Judge Miss J Alexander It was revealed that he was still unable to walk after suffering a debilitating stroke that left him in a coma.
on Netflix Reality Check: The Inside Story of America’s Next Top Model Documentary series, now playing, Miss J, 67, discussed his time on the show Tyra Banks, Nigel Barker and Jay Manuel. Miss J didn’t open up about his health scare away from the public eye until the final minutes of the three-part special.
“Everything changed. On December 27, 2022, I had a stroke,” he revealed. “I didn’t know where I was except in the hospital. I was in a coma for five weeks, I couldn’t walk, I couldn’t talk. I thought to myself, what am I going to do?”
Miss J’s personal video in the ward showed that he had lived there for at least “a year and five months” because he “could not walk or talk”.
“It was emotional. I cried. I’m not ashamed to say I cried. And then as soon as I got into the hospital, Jay and Nigel came to visit,” he recalled. “I thought back to when we used to perform together. I cried because I missed them so much.”
America’s Next Top Modelis a competition series in which aspiring models compete for the chance to start a career in the modeling industry, airing on multiple networks from 2003 to 2018. The bank hosted the showand Jay serves as the creative director, while Miss J and Nigel, both 53, serve as judges.
According to Miss J, the trio remained on good terms after being fired and reconnected during his serious health scare.

“I don’t know if he wanted me to see him that way. I was going to see him. It was a terrible shock, really upsetting and frightening and scary,” Nigel said in the Netflix doc. “When he saw me, he was so happy to see me, we both cried together and I held him.”
Jay, meanwhile, said Miss J struggled at first, adding, “I could definitely feel how frustrated he was. I can only imagine what was going through his mind.”
Miss J was asked about Tyra, 52 years old, Go to the hospital to visit him after he suffered a stroke. (Tyra was interviewed for the docuseries, but footage of her discussing Miss J’s health issues was not included in the final cut.)
“Not yet. She just sent me a text saying she wanted to come see me,” Miss J replied. “But no…not yet.”
In the docuseries, Jay, Miss J and Nigel spend time together between takes. Jay and Nigel comforted Miss J, who was still emotional about being in a wheelchair, which the audience didn’t see until the end of the show. Reality Check: The Inside Story of America’s Next Top Model.
“It’s been a journey and you’re talking a lot better now,” Jay said, with Nigel adding, “You’re getting over it. When we first met you in that hospital you could barely move, could barely talk. Now you sit up and do interviews, chat, talk, roll your eyes and make us laugh.”
Nigel continued: “It’s a long journey but you’ll get there. I know it’s going to be really tough.”
Miss J discussed his progress in his confessional, saying: “I miss being the queen of the runway. I was the one who taught the models how to walk, but now I can’t walk. Not yet. I’m determined to walk. I’m sure you’ll see me again. For me, it’s not over yet.”
