Tyra Banks and Les Moonves get into near-physical altercation over ‘America’s Next Top Model’ casting
Tyra Banks says the team behind America’s Next Top Model Before network executive Les Moonves halted casting efforts, “really wanted a Hispanic Latina girl” to appear on the show. Banks recalled how she “lost it” and how she and Moonves “almost got physical” before she ultimately “had to replace” potential contestants.
Moonves is not involved in the documentary series. The former chairman and CEO of CBS resigned in September 2018 amid multiple sexual harassment allegations, which the former executive denied. Before becoming CEO in 2003, Moonves had been with the network since 1995 and previously served as president of Warner Bros. Television.
Jay Manuel defends Tyra Banks against Janice Dickinson

The feud between Jay Manuel and Tyra Banks
Jay Manuel and Tyra Banks’ friendship lasted eight seasons until he expressed interest in leaving. Manuel recalled sending an email expressing his desire to leave but receiving only a three-word response from Banks. He was forced to return for one more season – and later for several more – but he never spoke to Banks off-screen again.
Producers asked Banks about her situation with Manuel, and she responded: “I’d rather… I should call Jay. I don’t want to do that here. But he’s a special guy.”
Tyra Banks falls out with Miss J and Nigel Baker
In 2012, America’s Next Top Model went through a transformation that resulted in J Alexander, Jay Manuel and Nigel Baker being fired from the show. The three spoke out in the Netflix docuseries about how they felt about not having Tyra Banks’ support during the process.
“We were going to put out a joint press release and they said we would all get offers in that press release,” Manuel recalled. “We see it all the time on TV shows where people say, ‘So-and-so has decided to go our separate ways.'” Tyra said, “We’ll put it in the press release about how we’re going to continue to work together.” So we agreed. “
Meanwhile, Banks said she was deeply affected by the loss of her colleagues.
“This is probably one of the hardest messages I’ve ever had to deliver in my life,” she said. “I cried myself to sleep that night. You know what? They were there from the beginning. They were the closest people in my life and I had to deliver the message that the deal was done and it was over. You can imagine what that felt like.”
She continued: “But bosses have bosses, and Big Boss knows that very well — there are no sacred cows. What I hear is, ‘You too, Tyra. Sandy Sullivan talks sexual assault
Second Round contestant Shandy Sullivan had a chance to win the contest but was sexually assaulted during a trip to Italy. Although the incident was filmed and later used as a so-called “cheating plot” on the show, Sullivan made it clear in the doc that she was too drunk to consent.

“Everything changed. On December 27, 2022, I had a stroke,” Miss J Alexander revealed at the end of the three-part special. “I didn’t know where I was except in the hospital. I was in a coma for five weeks, I couldn’t walk, I couldn’t talk. I thought to myself, what am I going to do?”
Miss J’s personal video in the ward showed that he had lived there for at least “a year and five months” because he “could not walk or talk”.
“It was emotional. I cried. I’m not ashamed to say I cried. And then as soon as I got into the hospital, Jay and Nigel came to visit,” he recalled. “I thought back to when we used to perform together. I cried because I missed them so much.”
When asked if she had received a visit from Tyra Banks, Miss J responded: “No, not yet. She just sent me a text saying she wanted to come see me. But no… not yet.”
The most controversial photography concepts
America’s Next Top Model, which ran from 2003 to 2018, followed aspiring models as they competed for modeling contracts, fashion spreads, mainstream magazine covers and cosmetics ads.
Over the years, each challenge idea has grown increasingly ridiculous, including photo shoots centered around homelessness, the risks of smoking, and more. There are also insensitive concepts like race swapping, murder, and eating disorders.
“Some of the ideas were wrong, bad, stupid,” explained Nigel Baker, noting that for “some reason no one really seemed to see it when it was being filmed”.
Tyra Banks also called it a “stupid s***,” while executive producer Ken Mock pointed out the challenge of seemingly viewing violence as their biggest “mistake.” Meanwhile, Jay Manuel recalled that he asked to be exempted from the race-swap episode, but he ultimately didn’t get to film it.
“I don’t think it’s controversial. I’m in my own little bubble in my own head,” Banks said, elaborating on ideas such as having models wear blackface. “Looking at the show now from a 2020 perspective, it’s a problem and I 100 percent understand why.”

Tyra Banks has been viewed with mixed feelings among the many season alums, with some thanking her for her support while others recall not being under her protection. Danielle Evans recalled that she won the entire season, but then Banks told her she knew the contestant wouldn’t make it in the industry.
Keenia Hill recalled how her entire narrative on the show revolved around her weight. Hill also pointed to a challenge in which a male model “aggressively” attacked and touched her, but her attempts to gain protection were met with humiliation.

Tiffany Richardson’s infamous outburst
Round 4 saw contestant Tiffany Richardson return for redemption, but failed to make it to the end after failing the challenge. Tyra Banks then yelled at Tiffany for wasting her potential, saying in a now-viral moment: “We’re all rooting for you!”
“I just wanted to change this woman’s life. I felt like she could be a supermodel with a capital S,” Banks noted. “I just saw all of that going down the drain. I saw her just not believing in herself and just giving up, not just giving up on the modeling competition.”
She continued: “I came too far. I lost it. It was probably bigger than her – it was family, friends, society. Black girls, all the challenges we face, a lot of people saying we’re not good enough. I think all of that was in that moment.”
Ms. Judge J. Alexander called the moment frightening, while Jay Manuel claimed, “A lot of things were said. And some of them were really not well-intentioned. I will probably never repeat the lines that were said in that room that day.”
A week after the panel recalled that moment, they were joined by lawyers.
Tyra Banks defends herself before teasing next season
While America’s Next Top Model was ultimately canceled, Tyra Banks hinted at a return after settling the controversy.
“Looking at that show from today’s perspective, it’s like, ‘Why did you do that?’ I thank you for that. That’s the only way you change. The only way you get better is if someone criticizes you,” Banks said. “This is important.” I want you to know that I want you to be as open as I am to being criticized when someone criticizes your sexuality.
