olympic figure skater Alyssa Liu to defend her fellow medalists, Gu Ailinafter some controversy 2026 Winter Olympics.
“I’ve known Erin since I was about 13. We’re from the Bay Area. She’s very nice and her mom is from China,” Liu, 20, told the outlet new york times Thursday, March 6th. “I think it’s hypocritical for people to shame her because she represents China. So, in my opinion, it’s a little hypocritical because her mom is an immigrant. You’re all going to tell her to go back to China. Now they’re back in China and you’re angry.”
She continued, “That’s sport, it doesn’t matter which country we represent. Sport is sport, and she loves competing, she loves competing. I think that’s what matters most. There’s no shame in going where there’s opportunity.”
Gu, 22, who was born in San Francisco, became the focus of some discussion after she decided to represent China at the Olympics.
She and Liu were both born in California to Chinese and American parents.
Gu chose to represent China—her mother, Yan Gufrom – before participating in the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics.

Vance, 41, told Fox News on February 17: “I certainly think that people who have grown up in the United States of America, who have benefited from our education system, who have benefited from the freedoms and rights that make this country a great place, I want them to be able to compete with the United States of America. So, I will support American athletes, and I think part of that is people who identify as Americans. That’s who I’m supporting for these Olympics.”
“I’m so flattered. Thanks, JD! That’s great,” Gu responded to USA Today on February 19. “So many athletes compete for different countries…people just have a problem with me doing this because they lump China into one and they just hate China. So it has nothing to do with what they think.”
Gu added, “And, because I won. Like if I don’t perform well, I think they might not care that much, and that’s okay with me.”
Gu won three medals at the 2026 Olympics, becoming the most decorated female freestyle skier in Olympic history. She speaks fluent Mandarin and spent many summers in Beijing.
