Aetherflux, the solar energy startup started by Robinhood founder Baiju Bhatt, is in the news to raise $250 million to $350 million in a Series B round that will cost the company $2 billion.
Getting money was first report and the Wall Street Journal, which said Index Ventures is leading the deal. Aetherflux has raised nearly $80 million since its launch in 2024. Aetherflux declined to comment.
Aetherflux has shifted focus in recent months as it pushed its power generation technology into data centers, with an emphasis on sending electricity to Earth with the lasers that were its original vision. Space companies such as SpaceX, Blue Origin, Starcloud, and others are now developing new distributed structures in space.
“Let the record show that we never put our foot down — it wasn’t a trip,” Bhatt joked in an interview with TechCrunch last week. “The light bulb went off about a year ago that, if you want to power AI with the technology we’re thinking about, it would be more profitable to put chips in space, rather than powering from space to data centers on Earth.”
Although the company plans to continue its experiments in the transmission of laser power on a satellite bus built by Apex Space, the first data center satellite is expected in 2027. “Our goal is to create something that competes with the economy of the world,” said Bhatt.
They it won’t be easy.
