ABC will start live streaming Oscars on YouTube in 2029

The Oscars will be broadcast exclusively on YouTube starting in 2029, the latest major change in Hollywood.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced the news on Wednesday, saying it had signed a multi-year deal that will grant YouTube exclusive worldwide rights to the Academy Awards until 2033.

The Oscars, scheduled for March 15, have been broadcast on ABC for half a century. Starting in 2029, the show will be live-streamed for free on YouTube.

It’s the latest shakeup in Hollywood as the company deals with studio sales and mergers and deep production cuts.

“The Academy is an international organization and this partnership will benefit our Academy members and the film community by allowing us to showcase the Academy’s work to the largest possible audience around the world,” Academy CEO Bill Kramer and Academy President Lynette Howell Taylor said in a statement.

Ratings for the 2025 Oscars were down compared to the previous year, as were several other awards shows including the Golden Globes and Grammys.
