Ahead of the Steelers’ do-or-die regular-season finale against the Baltimore Ravens — a game Pittsburgh needs to win to make the playoffs — Rodgers, 42, reflected on his impending free agency and potential retirement decision.
“I’m thinking about it this week, but obviously I’m 42 years old and I have a one-year contract,” he said, according to a published article. ESPN Wednesday, December 31st. “So you know what the situation is. Whenever the season ends, I’m going to be a free agent. So, that gives me a lot of options if I still want to play. I mean, there aren’t a lot of options, but I think if I decide I still want to play, maybe there’ll be one or two options.”
Rodgers continued: “I enjoyed the experience and everyone in Pittsburgh was great to me on and off the field. It was really what I expected from this experience and it was even better than I could have hoped for.”
The future Hall of Famer is entering his 21st season in the NFL and his first with the Steelers. The four-time MVP and former Super Bowl champion may not have decided on his future yet, but he said before the season that he believed 2025 would be his last.
“Yeah, I’m pretty sure that’s it,” Rodgers said on ESPN in June. The Pat McAfee Show. “That’s why we only signed a one-year contract. The Steelers didn’t have to commit any extra time or anything to it, so it was really about making my career filled with love and fun and peace.
“I’ve been playing for 20 years. It’s a long time,” he added. “I’m enjoying it and there’s no better place to end it than at one of the cornerstone teams in the NFL with Mike Tomlin (Steelers head coach) and a bunch of great leaders and great players in this city who look to you to win.”
At the time, Rogers also said he would work with his wife, Brittanyand then decide his future. He and Brittany tied the knot in early 2025, but Rogers said she prefers to stay out of the spotlight.
“My private life is my private life. It’s always going to be that way,” he explained. “I’m with someone who wants to be private. If and when she wants to go out and there’s a picture, she’s going to choose that. She should have that right.”
