Amazon is in early talks to invest up to $10 billion in OpenAI in a deal that would see the AI lab use E-commerce AI chips, Price CNBC report.
If successful, the partnership could benefit OpenAI more than $ 500 billion, Bloomberg reportciting an unknown source.
Amazon has been looking to diversify its bets in the AI competition, which it has seen in the past with an $8 billion sale to Anthropic, an OpenAI competitor. The e-commerce giant earlier this month also unveiled the latest in its portfolio Trainium series of chipsand explains the development of the next generation of chips, and completes its computing offering through Amazon Web Services.
News of the deal comes months later OpenAI completed its transition to a for-profit modelwhich gives more freedom to deal with investors other than Microsoft, one of the sponsors of the company with a 27% stake.
Amazon’s investment in OpenAI will be the latest sign circular marketing in the AI space – large hardware manufacturers and cloud providers meet with small AI companies to use their products, while startups offer to use their data centers and chips to train their own AI models.
Last March, OpenAI he put $350 million equivalent in CoreWeave, which used the money to buy chips from its subsidiary Nvidia. These same chips provide OpenAI, which increases CoreWeave’s revenue and ultimately makes OpenAI’s value even more significant. Then in October, OpenAI signed an agreement to take a 10% stake in AMD and committed to using the chipmaker’s AI GPUsand signing chip usage agreement with Broadcom in the same month. And in November, the creator of ChatGPT signed a $38 billion cloud computing deal with Amazon.
OpenAI and Amazon did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
