Addiction Podcast Host Recalls Nick Renner’s Sobriety Before Arrest

He continued: “Honestly, he showed a youthful love and hope for life. He wanted to be a part of what Chris and I were doing (the podcast). He wanted to have fun in recovery, and he wanted to be a successful entertainment writer.”

“In this little picture, when he was actually creating something — when he wrote ‘Being Charlie,’ or when he had an idea — I think he was just another guy with an idea,” he recalls. “(But) I think, in the grand scheme of things, when you’re facing Rob Lehner and Carl Lehner, and you’re a struggling drug addict, the pressure is tremendous because how much can a 24-year-old guy accomplish?”

According to Manheim, he initially declined Nick’s offer to call his father while recording the podcast. After his partner O’Connor died in 2018, Manheim changed his mind and Nick cut ties.

“I wish I hadn’t asked him to have Rob Reiner on the show, or at least not when I did, because it pushed him away,” Manheim admitted, before revealing that he sent Nick about 150 text messages over the next seven years without getting a reply.

Mannheim continue to speculate Regarding Nick’s personal struggles, he added, “That’s probably not a fair statement, but I will say this: If he was seeking serious recovery, I think over time he would be more inclined to contribute to the show because that’s what people in recovery want to do. They want to preserve friendships and convey messages and all those things.”
