Film directors Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner were found dead in their Los Angeles home, and their son has been arrested and booked on suspicion of murder.

Nick Reiner, 32, was arrested and is being held without bail, the Los Angeles Police Department said Monday.

Sources told BBC US partner CBS News that the deceased couple’s 28-year-old daughter Romy found her parents at home with multiple stab wounds on Sunday.

Rob Reiner is known for directing several iconic films across genres, including When Harry Met Sally, This Is Spinal Tap, Stand By Me, Misery and A Few Good Men.

Emergency services were called to Reiners’ home in Brentwood, California, at around 15:38 local time (23:38 GMT) on Sunday to provide medical assistance.

The Los Angeles Fire Department said two people were pronounced dead at the scene, 78-year-old Rob Reiner and his 68-year-old wife Michele.

Police said that a few hours later, at around 21:15 local time on Sunday, Nick Reiner was arrested. Investigators have not publicly outlined a motive and said the investigation is ongoing.

Nick Renner has spoken openly about his struggles with drug addiction and homelessness. His experiences formed the basis of “Being Charlie,” a semi-autobiographical film he made with his father in 2015.

The family’s home is in Brentwood, a wealthy celebrity enclave filled with large mansions, boutiques and restaurants. A security guard stood outside the home as media gathered outside the front door Monday morning.

Rob Reiner, the son of comedy great Carl Reiner, began his career in the 1960s and rose to fame playing Meathead on the television sitcom All in the Family.

In 1984, he cemented his success by directing and starring in the cult documentary This Is Spinal Tap.

Renner was married to “Laverne & Shirley” actress Penny Marshall from 1971 to 1981 and is the adoptive father of Marshall’s daughter, actress Tracy Renner.

He married Michele Reiner in 1989, whom he said he met while filming the romantic comedy film “When Harry Met Sally.” The couple has three children together.

Michele Reiner is an actor, photographer and producer, and the founder of photography agency and production company Reiner Light.

Rob Reiner is also known for his outspoken political activism and support for Democratic candidates.

President Donald Trump, who called their deaths “very sad” in a post, criticized Lehner, saying they “reportedly” died “due to him suffering from “Trump Derangement Syndrome” and “invoking the wrath of others with his immense, unrelenting, incurable pain.”

“His obsession with President Donald J. Trump is known to drive people crazy,” the president wrote.

It was unclear which reports the president was referring to, and while the investigation is being treated as a homicide, police have not commented on any possible motive.

The president and his allies often use the term Trump Derangement Syndrome to refer to those who criticize him. Lehner is an outspoken critic of Trump.

Some Republicans criticized Trump’s posts, including former ally Marjorie Taylor Greene, who said the death was a “family tragedy and had nothing to do with politics or political opponents.”

“Many families deal with family members suffering from drug addiction and mental health issues. It is very difficult and should be treated with compassion, especially when it ends in murder,” she said.

Trump’s post also drew outrage from some of the Lehners’ friends.

Maria Shriver, the former first lady of California and a long-time friend of the Lehners, said in an article published on X that the couple were “devoted parents.”

“They loved their children deeply and never gave up on taking care of them,” she said.

Sir Elton John, who stars in this year’s Spinal Tap sequel, said: “I’m in disbelief at today’s news about Rob and Michelle.

“They are two of the most beautiful people I have ever met and they deserve better.”

Actor John Cusack, who starred in Renner’s 1985 film “The Inevitable,” called him “a great man,” while Elijah Wood, who starred in the 1994 film “North,” said he was “shocked” by the couple’s deaths.
