Maria Colina Machado says leaving Venezuela ‘very, very dangerous’

Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Collina Machado, who has been in hiding for months, told the BBC she was aware of the “risks” of traveling to Norway to receive the Nobel Peace Prize.

Machado appeared in Oslo in the middle of the night, her first public appearance since January.

The 58-year-old defied travel bans and threats from the Venezuelan government to designate her as a fugitive from justice.

“They (the Venezuelan government) say I am a terrorist and must spend the rest of my life in prison, and they are looking for me,” she said.

“So, under these circumstances, it would be very, very dangerous to leave Venezuela today.”
