4 dead cats found in refrigerator, 17 animals rescued from ‘unhygienic’ home


In early December, two women in Canandaigua, New York, were charged with misdemeanor animal cruelty after police found four dead cats and 17 other animals in their refrigerator in their “uninhabitable” home.

Ontario County Humane Society Announce On December 3, they and the Ontario County Sheriff’s Office rescued 17 animals, including 14 dogs and three cats, from a property on December 2. All rescued animals were removed from their homes and taken to local veterinarians for emergency medical care.

These dogs include terriers, spaniels and pit bull mixes of various ages.

The Sheriff’s Office learned of the inhumane living conditions after receiving an animal neglect complaint “expressing concern about unsanitary conditions and lack of medical care for the animals in the home” from someone who had recently adopted two dogs fostered at the property.

Local officers obtained a search warrant for the address and discovered the animals in need, eventually taking the 14 dogs into police custody.

“Some dogs were found in metal cages, while others were roaming freely within the residence,” the Humane Society said in a statement. “In addition, three cats were rescued. Unfortunately, the bodies of four cats were found in the kitchen refrigerator.”

The four dead cats were taken to Cornell Animal Diagnostic Center, where necropsies will be performed to determine their cause of death, according to the Humane Society.

“Initial assessments indicate that the dogs and cats suffer from fleas, coat loss, dental problems and ear infections,” the Humane Society said in a statement, referring to veterinary examinations of the animals. “All are currently receiving ongoing medical care.”

Additionally, the shelter added that Canandaigua Township code enforcement officials “deemed the residence unfit for habitation due to severe hoarding conditions.”
