five months ago, William Aller His entire community is celebrating his heroic attempt to rescue an elderly neighbor from his burning home. The 70-year-old man was charged with murder this week.

His attempt was unsuccessful, but he was still praised for his brave efforts. Twenty minutes after firefighters arrived at the scene, the fire was extinguished and police found the 82-year-old woman dead in her bed.
Police interviewed Ahle shortly after and he allegedly told them he noticed smoke coming from the house while walking his dog around 1:30 a.m.
He told police that instinct took over and he walked straight toward the burning building. Aller rushed into Cranwell’s open garage but told police the fire was too intense.
After arson investigators determined that an accelerant was used to start the fire, detectives began investigating Aller as a possible suspect.
Aller learned Wednesday he was charged with murdering his mother and grandmother Cranwell when a SWAT team broke down his front door and handcuffed him. Aller was also charged with arson for setting the fire that killed Cranwell and with burglary for stealing items from her home.
Investigators have not revealed a motive, if known.

Aller was the person who called 911 to report smoke coming from Cranwell’s home.
Aller suffered severe burns during the so-called rescue operation and was treated at the burn center at Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston.
The Union County Medical Examiner’s Office ruled Cranwell’s death a homicide.
ABC News speaks Several of Ale’s neighbors said Ale was known in the town as a helpful person who was always willing to lend a helping hand. They said they were surprised to find out that Ale had been charged in the case.
“The man was hospitalized with severe burns after trying to rescue her,” said a neighbor who was not named in the report. “It’s really hard for me to believe.”
The stunned neighbor added: “All I can say is I’m shocked. He’s the neighbor, he seems like a good guy. He helped her initially. He tried to save her. So, it doesn’t make any sense, I just don’t understand it.”
Aller is being held in the Middlesex County Jail pending his next court appearance, officials said.
