Ohio University Football Head Coach Brian Smith He was suddenly placed on administrative leave earlier this month — but he still doesn’t know why.
Smith, 45, learned of the school’s decision on December 1 Ministry of Sports announced He has been placed on “a period of leave for an undetermined period of time.”
No reasons were given for the school’s decision.
Smith’s attorney told Rube On December 2, Smith was asked to leave in the middle of his workday.
The attorney claims Smith was given no information as to why he was placed on leave and insists no charges or changes have been made against the coach.
Nonetheless, WOUB reports that Smith will “deny all wrongdoing and will fight any allegations against him.”
Smith was also going through a divorce at the time the school made its decision, but documents obtained by WOUB show his personal life had nothing to do with his leave.
“None of what the plaintiff alleges is a cause of (Smith’s) current situation at Ohio University, where he has been placed on temporary leave,” the divorce papers read.
According to court documents, Smith and his ex-wife finalized their divorce on Tuesday, December 9.
Smith, who was without a real contract for most of this year, was expected to make $850,000 last season, according to documents obtained. USA Today October.

“If the school fires Smith without cause before December 1, the school will owe him the entire base salary remaining on his contract, which is the equivalent of $2,511,250.” front desk sports‘ Margaret Fleming Reported on Tuesday, December 9. “Beginning Dec. 1, if Smith decides to leave, he or his new employer will owe the school this money.”
Fleming continued, “The timing suggests Ohio State may be trying to avoid paying a full buyout. And, by placing Smith on paid leave without firing him, the university may be trying to avoid a wrongful termination lawsuit.”
US Weekly Ohio University has been contacted for comment.
Whatever the case, the school’s secrecy about Smith drew widespread criticism, including from Ohio University’s student newspaper.

It is the foreseeable consequence of institutional obstruction that has drawn individuals, including members of the Smith family, into a public crisis they did not cause.”
Smith went 8-4 in his first year as Bobcats head coach. defensive coordinator John Hauser Was appointed interim head coach on December 1.
Ohio State will face UNLV on Dec. 23 in the Scooter’s Coffee Frisco Bowl.
