Hundreds of people gathered in Bethlehem’s Manger Square in the occupied West Bank to watch the lighting of a giant Christmas tree – the first time holiday celebrations have returned to the town since the Gaza war began.
People can sing and dance amid the twinkling lights in the square in front of the historic Church of the Nativity, while Santa helps hand out sweet treats.
Residents welcomed the celebrations, with one saying she hoped “this light will lead us to a better future”.
As suffering continues in Gaza, resuming celebrations will not be without controversy, but Bethlehem Mayor Maher Kanavati said: “In my heart, I feel it is the right thing to do because Christmas should never be stopped or cancelled.”
