If you need to hear this…


I’ve been getting a lot of messages from readers lately who have my Spidey sense.

Here are some examples:

“I’ve been working 3x/week for 16 weeks. It’s going well and I’ve seen changes, but I’m not sure if my progress is good enough or what I’m missing.”

“I’m worried that my goals aren’t specific enough. I feel a little lost and there’s so much to consider. I’m not sure I got everything right.”

It answers a question I talked about earlier: What “enough” fitness really looks like.?

Is it normal to ask these questions. We all crave reassurance that what we do really matters.

And if you’re looking for a place to start or recalibrate, the Nerd Fitness Starter Guide. has some great frameworks to point you in the right direction.

But what if our fears have been preyed upon by an obsessed fitness industry optimization – focusing on the details and exaggerating their importance? And as a Magic: the Gathering nerd, I get it. I love geeking out on the details and fine-tuning the system.

But if we focus too much on “perfect,” we can lose sight of how impactful the foundational matter really is. And how strangely AWESOME that you are already working on those pieces. Don’t get me wrong. My message is not “Don’t worry! Just do the basics.”

For many of the people I talk to, it’s this: You’re already fine.

If you want to make some adjustments, great, but make sure as well celebrate the foundation you are building. Fitness doesn’t have to be one more thing to feel bad about.

Most of us are already very juggling: work, home, imperfect schedules, and limited time and energy.

The more people I talk to, the more I understand that what most people need is not more information – it is reassurance and clarity: that they are on the right path. Let them do enough. What you do them they are enough

And often, that clarity comes from realizing what you can let it gonot what you need to add.

If you’re strength training a couple of times a week, take short movement breaks during your day, or get a few hours of general activity each week – you’ve already done it. so good

Everything else? Details.

And sure, it can be fun to get lost in the details, but not at the expense of celebrating what you’ve already built.

Each rep. Every walking break. Every little victory.

Everything counts.
