Why the rich and powerful couldn’t say no to Epstein

This was one of the big set pieces for Washington in 2019.

All eyes are on Donald Trump’s former lawyer Michael Cohen, who is testifying before a House committee about his former boss.

Stacey Plaskett, a Democratic member of the committee, was preparing to question Cohen when she was seen on camera texting someone on her phone.

This week, the public discovered the identity of another person in that exchange — convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

He encouraged her to ask about a Trump Organization employee, according to emails released by his estate in response to a subpoena. After Ms. Plaskett did so, Epstein texted her back: “Well done.”

In hindsight, the incident resonated with many who said it highlighted his influence over America’s elite.

Plaskett denied she was seeking advice from Epstein and said she texted with many people that day, including Epstein, one of her constituents. As a former attorney, she said, she learned to seek out information from all sources — even people she didn’t like.

“I am disgusted by Epstein’s escapades. I strongly support his victims and admire their courage. I have long believed in and supported the release of Epstein’s full dossier,” she said in a statement to the BBC.

She said their exchange occurred before he was arrested for sex trafficking. But this was long after his 2008 conviction for soliciting prostitution.

Just a year ago, the Miami Herald named his private island in the United States as one of the places where he sexually abused multiple underage girls in a scathing investigation.

Just six months after she exchanged messages with Epstein, the disgraced financier committed suicide in her cell, according to medical examiners. His death, and the conspiracy surrounding it, would spark a reckoning that would send ripples through Washington and Wall Street and bring down some of his former friends.

Their exchanges are just one of many in the latest release of more than 20,000 pages of personal documents that reveal Epstein’s ability to maintain an elite social circle even after his conviction and Herald exposé.

How and why those relationships survived when other friends severed ties with him tells us not only about the dynamics of social circles at the highest levels of American society, but also about Epstein’s influence.

“He was a diabolical monster, but he was also brilliant because he was able to maintain this incredible web of some of the most powerful people in the world,” said Barry Levine, author of “Spiders: Inside the Criminal Network of Jeffrey Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell.”

“He had a charisma about him that put him in a position where people turned to him.”

Levine said Epstein considered himself a “character collector” who made connections for transactional purposes.

“He would use the information that he obtained … with the ultimate goal that he would either get a benefit from them, get a financial benefit from them or in a darker sense, I think, extort money from some of these people.”

Epstein’s ties to Labor’s Lord Peter Mandelson were of particular concern in Britain, and Lord Mandelson was eventually sacked as Britain’s ambassador to the United States in September.

Documents released by Congress show he maintained contact with pedophiles until late 2016, before the Herald exposé but after his conviction.

In a November 2015 email, Epstein told him after his birthday: “Sixty-three. You made it.”

Less than 90 minutes later, Lord Mandelson replied: “Just. I have decided to prolong my life by spending more time in America.”

He strenuously denied any knowledge of Epstein’s crimes or any wrongdoing and expressed regret that they continued to communicate with him.

Documents released by Epstein’s estate reveal his eclectic social circle, which included prominent academics, business tycoons and politicians.

Mr Levin said it was not an exaggeration to suggest that some of Epstein’s casual acquaintances may have been unaware of his abuse or were too impressed by his influential connections to ignore it.

“People forget things,” he said. “His seniority among the power brokers was very high and I think a lot of people probably just dismissed his conviction.”

Others may simply have been carried away by his wealth, reporters and people who knew him said.

In 2011, after Epstein was first convicted, David Patrick Columbia, founder of the New York Social Diary, told The Daily Beast: “Jail time no longer matters.” “The only thing that escapes you in New York society is poverty.”

Larry Summers, the former U.S. Treasury secretary and now president of Harvard University, sought romantic advice from Epstein, including an exchange in November 2018 (the same month the Herald investigation was published) in which he appeared to forward an email from a woman to Epstein asking how he should respond.

Epstein responded: “She sounds like she’s starting to need help 🙂 Great.”

Summers’ interactions with his former confidant came back to haunt him last week, leading him to announce that he was abandoning his public commitment and stopping teaching at Harvard.

“I am deeply ashamed of my actions and recognize the pain they caused,” Summers said.

Epstein also reportedly used his money skills to help renowned linguist Noam Chomsky, with whom he exchanged several messages over the years and invited him to stay at his home.

Flattery goes both ways. In an undated letter of support included in the trove of emails, Chomsky was full of praise for Epstein, saying the two had “many long and often in-depth discussions.”

The 96-year-old previously told the Wall Street Journal that Epstein helped him move money between accounts and “Epstein didn’t get a penny.”

“I know him, we see each other occasionally,” he said.

In the same article, he said: “What is known about Jeffrey Epstein is that he was convicted and served his sentence. Under U.S. law and norms, that would be a clean record.”

He did not respond to the BBC’s request for comment.

Levin said Chomsky was one of Epstein’s high-profile financial clients, many of whom Epstein helped save billions of dollars.

Levine said he was able to do this because he “understands tax law and finance to a certain extent better than the highest-paid people on Wall Street.”

One man’s name may appear more than anyone else in Epstein’s 23,000 pages of documents.

Trump did not send or receive any of the information contained in the thousands of documents and cut ties with Epstein.

In 2002, Trump described Epstein as a “terrific man.” Epstein later said: “I have been Donald’s closest friend for ten years.”

But the relationship eventually sours. According to Trump, they had a falling out in the early 2000s, two years before Epstein was first arrested. By 2008, Trump said he was no longer “a fan of his.”

Trump denies knowledge of Epstein’s sex trafficking. The White House also said Trump “kicked Epstein out of his club decades ago because he was a nuisance to his female employees.”

Mr Levine said there were many people who sent Epstein messages after his conviction that would have embarrassed them but did not mean they were involved in any of his crimes.

“Of course, everyone regrets the day they communicated with Jeffrey Epstein or spent time with him,” he said. “This is one of the most incredible stories of our time – of power, privilege, plunder.”

But at least one person said he knew immediately that Epstein was “disgusting.”

Howard Lutnick, the president’s commerce secretary, was Epstein’s neighbor for 10 years. He told the New York Post podcast that his first meeting with Epstein was also his last.

Shortly after Lutnick moved into his Upper East Side property in 2005, he said Epstein gave Lutnick and his wife a tour of his large home.

After seeing a massage table surrounded by candles in Epstein’s restaurant, Lutnick asked him how often he used it.

“He said, ‘Every day.’ And then he got weirdly close to me and he said, ‘And the right massage.'”

Mr. Lutnick said he and his wife exchanged glances and left.

“I decided I would never be in a room with that disgusting person again,” he said.
