The recent rise in Boeing shares stems from a fundamental strategic shift toward defense contracts driven by escalating global security tensions. The company has scored major wins, including a contract worth more than $20 billion for the F-47 Next Generation Air Control (NGAD) fighter jet and a $4.7 billion contract to supply AH-64E Apache helicopters to Poland, Egypt and Kuwait. The contracts put Boeing at the center of U.S. military modernization efforts to counter China’s rapidly expanding fleet of stealth fighters such as the J-20, which are now being produced at rates comparable to U.S. fifth-generation aircraft.
The F-47 program represents Boeing’s redemption after losing the joint fighter competition two decades ago. Boeing developed and tested the full-scale prototype in secret through its Phantom Works division, using digital engineering methods to validate the design and significantly speed up the timeline. The aircraft features extensive stealth technology and will operate as a command node to control autonomous drones in combat, fundamentally changing air combat doctrine. At the same time, updated Apache helicopters have resumed an important role in NATO’s Eastern Flank Defense Strategy and counter-drone operations, ensuring production line security until 2032.
However, implementation risks remain. The KC-46 tanker program still faces technical challenges with its long-range vision system, which has been delayed until 2027. The F-47’s advanced variable cycle engine is also two years behind due to supply chain constraints. Industrial espionage, including the sale of secrets to China, threatens technological superiority. Despite these challenges, Boeing’s defense portfolio provides a countercyclical revenue stream that can cushion the vagaries of commercial aviation, creating long-term financial stability as the world rearms into what analysts call an ongoing “supercycle” driven by great power competition.
