Irving plays in finals despite rib injury

Robert Irwin, son of the late conservationist Steve Irwin, is this year’s “Dancing with the Stars” winner, a decade after his sister Bindi won the same title.

In the popular American dance competition, celebrities are paired with professional dancers to perform in front of a panel of judges, and the audience votes for their favorite dancer.

The 21-year-old was tipped to win after a stellar performance during the show’s 11 weeks, which included a tribute to her father and a surprise appearance from sister Bindi.

Owen, who has a huge following in the United States, gave his finale an Australian twist, with a dance choreographed to a song by Australian rock band Jet.

During Tuesday night’s three-hour finale, Owen and his dance partner Witney Carson also performed songs by Avicii and Sydney-born Sam Sparro.

They then triumphed in the “Instant Dance Challenge” – where Owen and Carson were told the dance style and song minutes before taking the stage.

Despite a rib injury, Irving competed in the final, beating other finalists including influencer Alex Earle and Olympic gymnast Jordan Chiles.

This came despite three contestants – not including Owen – receiving perfect scores of 30 for their first dance. However, it didn’t take long for Irving to get a perfect score.

After his final performance, he burst into tears and said he wanted to make his father proud.

“I wish he could see it, I really wish he could be here,” he said.

Steve Irwin is famous for his television wildlife programs that often see him working with crocodiles, leading to him being dubbed “The Crocodile Hunter.”

Robert was killed by a stingray during a diving expedition off the coast of Australia in 2006, when he was just a baby.

Robert Irwin inherited his father’s love of wildlife and has long been a keen photographer, most recently becoming an Earthshot ambassador.
