But the examples continue.
“Sesame seeds. Sesame seeds, sesame oil. So out comes the hummus,” she continued. “All nuts except peanuts and almonds. Mangoes. MSG… It’s ridiculous.”
Kimmel, 58, sympathized with Washington, saying she must have “not been able to eat” due to her various allergies, prompting the actress to reveal her experience at the Hollywood soirée.
“At all these fancy feasts, when they give you food on the plate, like at the Met Ball, I was eating jerky in some bathroom,” she shared.
As for traveling abroad, Washington has figured out a clever way to make sure her dietary restrictions are met.
“I receive cards in this language,” she said. “I went to Hong Kong this summer and I made some cards with pictures of all the things I’m allergic to and (text) in the language. When I travel, I make cards. I can tell you how to say, like, ‘mai nam pla’ – which means ‘no fish sauce’ in Thai.”
Despite her allergies, Washington said she has no problem cooking for her family using fish, sesame seeds and other ingredients. The actress shares daughter Isabelle Amarachi, 11, and son Caleb Kelechi, 9, with her former NFL star husband Nnamdi Asomuga. She is also the stepmother of Asomuga’s daughter from a previous relationship.
“But here’s the thing: I can cook everything,” Washington said. “I might need to open a window or turn on a fan, but I cook seafood, I cook everything I’m allergic to. I cook for my family and use a lot of sesame oil.”
Washington’s comments about her children are rare for the actress, who is very private about her personal life.
“I think from the beginning, Nnamdi and I have always been really protective of our partnership and our relationship because we wanted it to be ours, and we found that we were able to define and build a relationship for ourselves and with each other outside of the public eye,” washington told people June 2024.
“I think in many ways we just want to give our children the same opportunity to define their own lives and enter public spaces on their own terms,” she continued.
“We choose to be athletes and artists, that’s our choice. But we want them to be kids,” Washington added.
