“I learned that even in the midst of sadness, there can be joy. I guess I didn’t really understand that until recently,” she wrote.

Patterson shared that her father was diagnosed with the disease three years ago and fought to survive until treatment “was no longer an option.”

“Yet, in the midst of my heartbreak, one of the happiest moments of my life happened. I got engaged to the love of my life and we began planning a huge wedding celebration this September,” she wrote.

Patterson continued, “As my father’s condition continued to deteriorate and we faced the reality of end-of-life care, I was faced with things I had never allowed myself to imagine. I couldn’t imagine a life where my father wasn’t the one to walk me down the aisle. So we decided to gather our immediate family while we still could and share a small, private ceremony together.”

Patterson expressed her gratitude that she was able to spend time with her father on his special day before his death, creating a “beautiful” memory that will last a lifetime.

“On May 5th, my dad walked me down the aisle. It was simple, emotional, and beautiful, and I will spend the rest of my life searching for words to describe it,” she wrote. “He became unresponsive the next day and three days later he went home to be with the Lord.”

Patterson added that she and Bates are still planning a larger wedding celebration in September because she knows her father will look down on them.

Bates and Patterson announced their engagement on May 2 by sharing joint proposal photos via Instagram. The post was titled “The easiest thing is 🤍💍.”

Patterson shared more photos of the romantic moment via her Instagram Stories, writing, “I can’t wait to be your wife. I love you more than words can say.”

The warden is one of 19 children of Raising Bates couple Jill and Kelly Jo Bates.

After their son’s engagement, the proud parents wrote on Instagram: “We are so excited to see the smiles they bring to each other and we have all fallen in love with Kaybrie’s sweet, fun, warm personality! Couldn’t be happier!”
