Waymo leads the way in autonomous vehicle registrations while Tesla trails behind

Waymo has 600 autonomous vehicles registered in Texas, a number that surpasses its competitors Avride, Nuro, Tesla, and Zoox, according to information available on a new website launched by the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles.

The vehicle tracking tool — part of a new law requiring AV companies to register with the DMV — provides the public with an accurate and easy-to-find profile of the number of self-driving cars in Texas. The state law, which went into effect on May 28, requires companies to test or deploy AVs in the state to share the number of vehicles on their boats and other safety information.

It also shows the difference between Waymo and its partner Tesla – two companies that offer robotaxi services.

Alphabet’s Waymo registered 577 autonomous vehicles in Texas, followed by Avride with 317, and Nuro with 47. Tesla, which launched robotaxi service in Austin last summer and said it has expanded to Dallas and Houston, registering 42 autonomous vehicles. Other companies that have autonomous vehicles in the state include Volkswagen MOIA agentwhich has 12 electric, autonomous ships.

The growth of autonomous vehicles only reveals a lot about where a company stands on the board. Most of these companies – Nuro and Zoox, for example – are not trading. Also these numbers do not track the number of vehicles in use. (Waymo, for example, temporarily suspended service in some Texas cities earlier this month because of how its vehicles were operating during flooding.)

But there’s no denying Waymo’s dominance in Texas — until now.

After a while, the tool should show its size. That’s it he started his business in Austin in March 2025 and expanded to Dallas, Houston, and San Antonio.

The website also provides registration statistics for other applications of autonomous vehicle technology, including self-driving cars. Aurora, a publicly traded company that launched a driverless car business in May 2025, it has 91 self-driving cars. Major competitors Kodiak AI and Waabi have 33 and 13 self-driving cars, respectively. Gatik AI, a startup that focuses on self-driving cars, has 64 vehicles in its fleet.
