Gayle King Surprised by ex-husband William Bumpus” publicly apologized for cheating on her years ago.
“I was surprised, but I can also say I appreciate what he said,” King, 71, told TMZ Thursday, May 28. “It was a very painful time. But people need to understand that anyone who’s been through it knows how painful it is. But I also know that you can go through it and come out on the other side.”
On Wednesday, May 27, she appeared on Alex CooperKim spoke on the “Call Her Dad” podcast Bumpus, 70, caught cheating on one of her best friends 1990. She recalled returning home after a canceled flight and her then-husband trying to prevent her from entering the home.
“I don’t believe him,” she said. “I came down and there they were – or she was huddled behind the door in a towel. It was a good towel.”
King said she remained calm when confronting Bumpus and his mistress because their children were at home. (The exes share a daughter Kirby40, with son will39. Bumpus is also the father of another 16-year-old daughter, Poet. )
“I was thinking, ‘The kids are here and I don’t want anyone to know,'” she continued. “That was my main thought, ‘I don’t want anyone to know.’ That’s not going to happen to me today.”

King and Bumpus tied the knot in 1982 and tried to repair their marriage after the scandal. However, they eventually divorced in 1993.

“I offer my deepest apologies to Gail, our daughter Kirby and her husband Virgil, our son William and his wife Elise, and our three grandchildren for the pain I caused decades ago. These actions were mine,” Bampus told TMZ on Thursday. “I have acknowledged (my actions) for a long time – including myself saying it publicly in 2016, and it still stands.”
He continued, “Gail had every right to share a painful chapter that changed the trajectory of our marriage and family nearly 40 years ago. I respect her right to tell her story, and that’s where I’m going to tell it.”
Kim told TMZ on Thursday that both she and Bumpus have “healed” and “moved on.”
“The reason I can speak so openly about this is because of the time that has passed,” she added. “I’m in a really good place and so is he.”
