Universal Music Group and TikTok renew partnership to combat illegal AI music


Universal Music Group (UMG) and TikTok recently he announced renewing their license agreement, which includes a commitment to remove illegal AI-generated music from the platform to improve the way artists and songwriters are appreciated.

The new agreement represents a significant change between UMG and TikTok.

For years, UMG has been pushing the platform, advertising services, and AI companies to adopt stricter policies. Conflict between UMG and TikTok It escalated in 2024 when UMG accused TikTok of failing to address issues related to AI-generated music and copyright infringement. This public debate led UMG to temporarily withdraw its music catalog from TikTok – a decision that confirmed the app’s heavy reliance on major licenses because popular songs disappeared from user videos overnight.

The timing of TikTok’s commitment to combating fake or unlicensed music is important, especially as the music industry grapples with the proliferation of AI-generated content. Over the past few years, the industry has been increasingly concerned about AI tools that can imitate artists’ voices or create fake music that uses editing techniques. Viral AI-generated songs impersonating big names like Drake and The Weeknd have caused concern, especially as some have racked up millions of streams before being downloaded.

The agreement could also serve as a template for how tech companies approach AI collisions, intelligence, and platform responsiveness.
