A site called the UK Visa Portal is publicly revealing the passports and selfies of those who have registered and paid for the site to obtain a UK visa, TechCrunch has learned.
An anonymous person informed TechCrunch about the security lapse, saying that the site shows at least 100,000 documents from people who uploaded their passports and selfies to the site as part of the project.
This site is not affiliated with the UK government, and others to be he complained that he wrongly paid this company instead using the official GOV.UK website.
TechCrunch has confirmed this UK Visa Portal is the source of the data leak and verifies the authenticity of the disclosed data by contacting the affected individuals and asking them if their information was correct.
The UK Visa Portal does not have a security reporting system through its website, nor does its website provide the names or contact information of the company’s management. TechCrunch sent an email to the address on the UK Visa Portal website to inform the company of a security issue and ask which of the administrators can approve more information to resolve the issue. Considering the sensitivity of the information disclosed, TechCrunch explained that it could not share the facts with the company’s customer support box because it cannot guarantee that the information disclosed will not be misused.
Instead, TechCrunch heard from the company’s attorneys and a public relations firm. TechCrunch also explained that based on the nature of the leaked files, they can only share the information with the company’s management, and ask them to contact TechCrunch.
TechCrunch has not heard back from the management of the UK Visa Portal. The security breach has not yet been fixed.
As the security issue continues, TechCrunch believes it is in the public interest for people using the company’s services to be aware of the issue. TechCrunch does not publish details in order to reduce any risk in their information.
It is not necessary to use a third party to apply for a UK visa electronically, unless you retain an immigration lawyer, and applicants must use the UK government website.
