Grimes, 42, formerly weigh the concept for marshal before the premiere.
“I’m my own worst critic,” Grimes told Entertainment Weekly in February 2026. “I was like, ‘If you polled people on who wanted a spinoff, I don’t know if Kes would be at the top of the list. I think there are other characters they’d like to see.'”
Grimes used that as motivation, adding, “So there’s a fire inside me. Like, it has to be good. If it’s not, I’d rather not do it. We worked really hard to make sure that any original Yellowstone fan would grab something.”
He continued: “But we also wanted the show itself to be meaningful if you’ve never seen Yellowstone. I think we did our best to do that.”
Since Yellowstone premiered in 2018, the Dutton family’s story had enough potential to inspire six spinoffs (and counting) to join Paramount Network’s slate, but delays have come with it. “As we were filming the last few episodes of the original series, they started asking the question. There started to be some offers for a spinoff, but I hadn’t received one yet, and I thought, ‘I guess this is the one for me,'” Grimes recalled. “Then I got a call and it was like, ‘This is going to be CBS primetime and it’s going to be more of a procedural format.'”
