BBC visits the site of China’s worst mining disaster in more than a decade

An explosion at a coal mine in northern China has killed at least 82 people and left two missing, officials said.

The gas explosion in Liushenyu Coal Mine is China’s most serious mining disaster since 2009. President Xi Jinping said that all efforts must be made to search and rescue.

Rescuers deployed mine inspection robots equipped with gas sensors and infrared cameras underground early Sunday morning, state media reported.

BBC China correspondent Stephen McDonald was at the scene of the explosion in Shanxi Province.
