“It was great to start with the blueprint of this wonderful book series, but adapting it into a TV series is a little different,” said showrunner Louis Levy Exclusive story US Weekly. “We need to keep the audience’s attention in different ways.”

“We have a lot of stories told in different ways. We have eight episodes instead of a whole book,” she noted. “So we really start with those things that are super non-negotiable — things that off-campus wouldn’t be without.”
She continued: “From that point on, we added as many moments from the book as we could. We put them in like Easter eggs, and we really took the time to understand a person’s inner character and externalize it.”

Stephen Carlin
Carlin actually auditioned for the role of Logan before finding Dean off campus.
“I think it’s great. But it’s funny how the casting process works because I understand why I didn’t get the role,” he told Bustle in May 2026. “Then Dean came along and I thought, well, this seems more to my liking.”
Mika Abdullah
“I originally auditioned for Hannah,” Abdullah, who now plays Ellie, tells us exclusively. “I just knew it wasn’t right. Everybody knew it wasn’t right. And then, when I heard they wanted to bring me back to play Ellie and I finally got the script, I thought, ‘This is right.’ Everything fell into place in a really good way.”
