Can a football match ease relations between North and South Korea?

A women’s soccer match between North and South Korea marked the first time North Korean athletes have crossed the border since 2018.

Nei Guxiang won 2-1 Semifinals against South Korea’s Suwon teamearning them a spot in the Asian Women’s Football Champions League final.

North Korea will face Japanese side Tokyo Green in the final on Saturday at the same stadium. More than 7,000 tickets were sold out within hours of tickets going on sale for the rare North-South semifinals at the Suwon Sports Center.

But with relations between the two countries in a deep freeze, BBC Seoul correspondent Jake Kwon explores whether a football match could spark new diplomatic efforts.
