Anthropic has acquired core infrastructure used by OpenAI, Google, and Cloudflare

Anthropic announced Monday that it has acquired Stainless, a startup founded by former Stripe engineer Alex Rattray whose software is widely used by AI labs, including OpenAI and Google.

Anthropic did not disclose the details of the agreement. However, The Information report last week that the company was in negotiations to acquire Stainless, which is supported by Sequoia Capital and Andreessen Horowitz, for more than $ 300 million.

The acquisition will take the major service provider out of the hands of Anthropic’s competitors. The company told TechCrunch that it will All stainless steel productsincluding its SDK generator. An Anthropic spokesperson said Stainless customers will retain the SDKs they’ve built so far and have full rights to change and add as they see fit.

The New York-based startup, which was founded in 2022, raised the bar for the emerging AI industry by automatically creating and developing software development kits, or SDKs — the libraries developers use to interface with APIs.

Rattray developed programs which can take API descriptions and turn them into development-ready SDKs in a number of programming languages, including Python, TypeScript, Kotlin, Go, and Java. It became a popular tool because the platform automatically updates SDKs as APIs change and eliminates the time-consuming process of maintaining them manually.

Technology is very important companies such as Anthropic, OpenAI, Google, Replicate, Runway, and Cloudflare that are developing AI assistants that can interact with external applications and complete tasks on behalf of users. Stainless’s SDK tools are an easy way to create and maintain those connections – but going forward, those tools will only be available to Anthropic, not its competitors.

According to Anthropic, Stainless software has helped develop every Anthropic-approved SDK since the early days of its API.

“I started Stainless because SDKs need as much attention as the APIs they wrap,” Rattray said in a press release written on Monday. “Anthropic was one of the first teams to bet on this with us. We’ve been seeing what developers have done on Claude over the past few years, which made our teams a simple concept. The team continues to do the work we love, on the platform where it matters most.”
