When “Choosin’ Texas,” the hit song Langley co-wrote and produced with Lambert, 43, won the award for single of the year, McLaughlin, 34, jumped to his feet and started clapping, marking Lambert’s 20th career ACM award. Lambert is nominated for eight ACM Awards this year, including Female Artist of the Year, Song of the Year, Music Event of the Year and Visual Media of the Year for “A Song Worth Singing” Chris Stapleton and “Trailblazer” annual music event Reba McEntire and Lenny Wilson. Lambert also performed her new single “Crisco” during the show in full denim attire and a white cowboy hat.

“I think what I learned the most is that communication is everything,” she told us then. “Love doesn’t always solve problems. You have to talk about the bad stuff. Sometimes you have to compromise, and you have to be willing to listen to the other person when you have something important to say. Sometimes, love is hard, but the rewards are worth it.”
Lambert also praised McLaughlin for challenging her in a positive way.
“He called me out and I loved that. I needed that,” she said of her husband. “I think it’s unhealthy for people, especially artists or celebrities, to surround themselves with yes-men. If you surround yourself with people who are honest with you, you’ll go further and be healthier in the long run.”

As for how the two spend their downtime, Lambert insists they’re just like any other couple.
“We’re calm,” she noted. “When we get off work, I’ll hang out on the patio. We’ll have drinks and listen to music. Sometimes we’ll have the best parties by ourselves. He loves what he calls ‘happy hour music’ — ‘Matchbox Twenty’ and ‘Goo Goo Dolls.’ So we have different tastes, but we’ll sit there and listen to it for hours. Sometimes I say to him, ‘We’re kind of on a date,’ and it’s really cool.”
Five years after marrying McLaughlin, Lambert looked back on their whirlwind romance.
“I kind of went for it; no risk, no reward,” she told us Married McLaughlin after three months together. “I just feel like the worst things that could happen, I’ve been through it. If it’s over, it’s over.”
She continued, “If you don’t put your heart out there, can you get that big love that everyone wants, that all the songs, all the movies want? I’m wary of that in a lot of ways, but when it comes to my heart, I’m like, what do you really have to lose? Pain is pain, but it will pass.”
