Images of Silicon Valley tokenmaxxing time now has its weapons. A new open-source project brings your Claude Code usage statistics into a small desktop dashboard, allowing AI-powered users to monitor their usage.
Of course, you can follow the Claude Code to use directly in the terminal using commands or something external devices and programsbut it’s not as fun as seeing a pixel version of the Clawd sprite dance on the screen before displaying the icon usage information, is it?
“Clawdmeter,” as the device is called, is an exciting project for AI power users and a timely demonstration of how well Anthropic Claude has infiltrated the developer community and the growing interest in tokenmaxxing. This new “production” sees programmers in various tech companies expanding the number of AI tokens used in projects as a measure of the number of AI adopters.
Like one Reddit user joke on seeing the project for the first time: “Right now, Anthropic has to ship it to us for free.”
Someone suggested adding a button to increase the amount or add more tokens using your card on file. (Ha, this can be dangerous!)
The idea for this project comes from Reykjavik, an Icelandic developer Hermann Haraldssonwho says he’s always wanted to play with combos but never had the time.
“I’m not a developer or anything like that,” Haraldsson told TechCrunch in a phone call. But Claude was able to help him with the job in just a few days, he said. “It’s a democratized way to get software, so everyone can do what developers used to do. I think that’s really cool.”
Most of the time he spent designing the device was focused on the design, making sure he got the right fonts, colors, and animations.
To power your dashboard, you can use a small lithium-ion battery show if Waveshare ESP32-S3-Touch-AMOLED-2.16which connects to your laptop via Bluetooth. When the device is turned on, the splash screen plays Clawd’s pixel-art animations which gets busier as your interest rate rises. You can also press the middle button to cycle through different video formats if you want.
“I love it when I’m working, and I feel like it’s going crazy – it’s like a dopamine loop,” says Haraldsson.
The videos stay on the screen until you press the center button, which shows your session and Claude’s weekly usage in simple charts.
You can also press this button to open the Bluetooth window, which displays the connected status and provides the update status. From there, you can tap the screen to return to the animation itself.
Meanwhile, the other two side buttons send Space and Shift + Tab over Bluetooth for Claude Code audio and editing shortcuts. The latter allows you to switch between Normal mode, “Accept Updates”, Scheduled Mode, and Auto Mode.
Haraldsson says the device is compatible with your user interface because it reads your Claude Code OAuth token to make an API call, which pulls the user code from the response headers directly.
Because Clawdmeter is an open source project, anyone can develop it to add their own features, animations, displaysand more, depending on their preferences and needs.
Haraldsson says he was surprised to see that more than 800 people have called on GitHub since it was launched on May 10, and 50 have already stopped the project to develop on their own. They doubt that the device will make them happy because it has unpleasant feelings.
“There is a kind of nostalgia for when you had any hardware device – like a Walkman to play music, or an iPod,” says Haraldsson. (Or, like one Redditor install itClawdmeter is like a “hardware Tamagotchi for my window.”)
“I know it doesn’t change anything – like, you can have this on your computer – but it’s fun,” says Haraldsson.
