Former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was found guilty of crimes against humanity and sentenced to death.
A special court in Dhaka found that she ordered a violent crackdown on student-led protests last year, during which the United Nations estimated that up to 1,400 people died, mostly by gunfire from security forces.
In a statement after the verdict, Hasina called the court’s decision “biased and politically motivated.”
