Indigo brings an open source website to a single application

Trying to break free from the social media billionaires, but don’t know where to start? A new program called Indigo is launching today to allow users to view social media sites across multiple services, all under one roof.

Decentralized social media is having a moment, as more and more people are realizing that they want to improve their algorithms, feeds, optimization decisions, and other takeaways from online communities. However, there are several options that you can choose from. Users can choose the servers that make up the social network Mastodonbuilt on the older ActivityPub protocol (also used by Meta’s Thread), or they can join a new social network Blueskywhich runs on the AT Protocol.

Indigo it does not force people to choose. In fact, the program brings different social networks together in a seamless experience, with a synchronized time that connects all devices and the author that allows users to send both messages at the same time.

This program was developed by Soapbox app – the same group that created it Croissant joint toolwhich provides an easy way to deploy to Mastodon, Bluesky, and Threads from a single interface. Indigo co-creator Ben McCarthy, who also produced it Obscura software and othersnoted at TechCrunch that the new app is built on what the team has already experienced with Croissant, adding new features that make it a great stand-alone app for all social media users.

When using Indigo, you can distinguish Bluesky and Mastodon records in your timeline: Bluesky records are outlined in blue, while Mastodon records appear in purple.

The program also includes other tools and features, including options that allow users to automatically scroll to the top when new posts arrive, hide NSFW content, mute users or keywords, a filter that responds to viewing, enable dark mode, and more.

In addition, you can access all your feeds and lists from social networks through the “more” menu, track your notifications on both services, and search in Bluesky and Mastodon using all Indigo searches.

The ability to bypass mail, sync time across devices, and track network activity requires a paid subscription of $4.99 per month or $34.99 per year. (There’s also an option to buy one for $119.99 for those dedicated to the open source.) Meanwhile, Indigo works on iPhone, iPad, and Mac.
