Brian Howie on Ginny and Georgia addressing recasting issues

Howie also praised the show Get older with La Torraca, 15 — even though Austin doesn’t age more than a day or two between seasons — as a comment on kids who grow up prematurely due to trauma.

“Certainly, I think that’s what was so smart about them in the writers’ room,” she noted. “You’ll see this season. Last season they started to play a little bit, but this season they’re more in tune with the natural changes that are happening.”

After Season 3 aired in 2025, viewers questioned whether LaToraka was now too old to play Ginny’s (Antonia Gentry) half-brother, while noting that the Netflix show went to great lengths to obscure the young actor’s rapid growth.

“Anyone who’s worked on the show will tell you, I’m picky about details. I’m very specific about a lot of things. And then something like Diesel gets five years (older) and I’m like, ‘Whatever.’ Because you can’t control it,” she exclusively told US Weekly June 2025. “We can’t recast. Diesel is Austin.”

Lambert made it clear that there are no plans to bring in someone younger to play Austin.

“We plan to have a few jokes. We know he’s growing up, and that helps,” she said, before admitting that viewers will have to “suspend their disbelief” because La Torraca “grows up and it’s a TV show.”

“You don’t want to do a big time jump because that really misses out on the emotional storytelling. So the flashbacks are meaningless in terms of their timeline,” she added. “Time is just a concept in Wellsbury.”

“I don’t know how our writers manage to do this season after season. I’m blown away by these scripts. I’m on the edge of my seat like everyone else, and I feel like it’s such an honor to have a fourth season because you get to see all of this really pay off for all the characters,” she told us.

“The characters have very, very complex journeys. There’s a lot of payoff this season with respect to certain relationship dynamics and certain goals for each character,” she noted. “At the same time, you get to see every character try out a new persona in some way, and that’s something I feel like I always have to give it to our creators and writers. Howie continued: “We also meet some new characters, which brings out new sides to a lot of them and is fun to play and hopefully just as fun to watch.”
