Billie Eilish details her Tourette syndrome tics

“I do have Tourette’s syndrome and I have vocal tics, but luckily for me and others, they’re mostly just noises and I can keep them quiet,” Eilish explained. “I went through phases where my speech became tics, but there’s something called repression, if you’ve heard of it.”

She added, “When I’m being interviewed, I do everything I can to constantly suppress my tics. Once I leave the room, I have to let them all out.”

“I think it’s disturbing that people don’t understand what Tourette’s is, and if I started having a tic, like a lot in a row, people would ask, ‘Are you okay?'” she said. “That’s normal. Like, if you didn’t see me twitching today, you didn’t see my knees, which were twitching under this table, and my elbows were like… I kept clenching my arms.”

She continued: “Some people don’t even get the chance to suppress them in any way. As someone with Tourette’s, the ‘not understanding’ of this is really frustrating.”

Eilish have been diagnosed with this disease as a child and told david letterman She rarely discussed the incident during an appearance on his late-night talk show in 2022, in part because of how others reacted to her tics.

“It’s really weird, I haven’t talked about it at all,” she said at the time. “The most common reaction from people is to laugh because they think I’m being funny. They think it’s a funny move on my part. So they’ll say, ‘Huh,’ and I always get really angry about that. Or they’ll say, ‘What?’ and I say, ‘I have Tourette’s syndrome.'”
