Billionaire Airbnb co-founder Joe Gebbia is growing his team to US National Design StudioMr. Trump’s work focused on improving the government’s presence on the Internet. On Monday, Gebbia announced that American artist Peter Arnell had joined the team to become the first major US producer.

Gebbia shared the news of Arnell’s hiring time The Wall Street Journal’s “Future of Everything” conference on Monday. Arnell joins a team that combines Silicon Valley technology and software engineering expertise, with a focus on improving the performance of US government platforms.

In the ten years of his work as a brander and marketer, Arnell has worked with major companies such as Donna Karan New York, Samsung, Unilever, Pepsi, Reebok, Chrysler, The Home Depot, and others. Now, his goal will be to rebuild the digital footprint of the United States of America, which he calls “the greatest symbol in the world.”

“This is a unique and different perspective on the word ‘symbol’ because we are not changing this country,” Arnell said at the WSJ event. “What we’re trying to do is, basically, have consistency, (a) unified look and feel, so that we can start to trust how the American citizen interacts with the government every day.”

He said the move presents an “exciting challenge” ahead, as the group is tasked with revamping 27,000 government websites. To do this, the team relies on many of the same design principles that they used to create high-end consumer apps, such as Airbnb.

There is the spirit of Airbnb here, “said Gebbia, saying that like bringing the difficult process of finding a room to rent or renting a vacation on the Internet, the public service also wants to take difficult steps and make them easier, safer, and more reliable.

He also said some of the work that the group has already completed in order to improve the design and operation of the government’s internet and websites so far. For example, a team he reformed the government’s retirement planthat used to be cumbersome and paper-based, to a streamlined online process that employees can complete in minutes, sometimes, instead of months. Another method that is being shown has brought the public transportation from 87 clicks to 12, and the plan is to bring it to 10, he said.

This design process will also help to overcome some of the frustrations of using public websites, such as the loss of navigation pages or the pages disappearing, which cause users to lose their data.

Gebbia cleverly referred to the poor consumer’s problem of using government websites as “one of the biggest problems UX methods you can think of” – references to deceptive designs or traps on websites that are used to trick users.

“Just thinking that (the government website) is difficult prevents you from participating,” he said. “I think we’re moving on from this … this is over. People will feel empowered to do what they need to do with the government,” he said.
