Six seasons and two movies have been aired, and the third one is about to be released. Downton Abbey It’s probably one of the most successful period dramas of all time – and for good reason. The story of the Crawleys, a wealthy family who run an estate in the English countryside, is filled with drama, romance, scandal and history both upstairs and downstairs. The story begins in 1912 and continues until 1926.
At the heart of this PBS series is Lady Mary Crawley (Michelle Dockery), the eldest daughter of the family, distant relative Matthew Crawley, (Dan Stevens), when the previous heir died on the Titanic, he became the heir to the estate (passing to women was not allowed). Mary’s two sisters Edith (Laura Carmichael) and Sybil (Jessica Brown FindlayAs women’s rights began to expand, they also sought marriage and dared to dream bigger.
The Downton Abbey crew has also experienced its fair share of romantic drama, especially between the valet Mr. Bates (Brendan Coyle) and maid Anna (Joanne Froggatt). Perhaps the most memorable character is Lady Violet, a bitter and shrill countess played by the late, great. Maggie Smith.
