Wrestler Tanea Brooks receives live tribute amid ALS diagnosis


All Elite Wrestling Shows Honor Wrestlers Taneja “Rebel” Brooks before she announced that she had been Diagnosed with “late-stage” amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis).

Brooks shared with her social media followers on Friday, May 1, that she had recently been diagnosed with “late-stage ALS,” a neurological disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. ALS — also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease or motor neuron disease — Causes progressive loss of ability to control speech, breathing, and eating. There is currently no known treatment.

The wrestler has been battling primary pulmonary lymphoma, a type of rare type of lung cancersince 2024. In a video blog on Friday, Brooks explained that the latest developments in her battle with cancer led doctors to discover she had ALS.

“The thing is, sometimes we don’t want to hear the answer to our prayers. So, while I was waiting for lung surgery for the mass in my lung, the doctors at the Mayo (Clinic) finally found out what was going on,” she told the audience.

Brooks admitted that her medical team “had no idea” how long she would live because “there’s not a lot of research behind ALS.”

“It explains why I have trouble walking and talking (and) all my functions will soon decline. But now, we can prepare for the future and what’s to come,” she admitted.

The 12-year professional wrestling veteran personally thanked All Elite Wrestling bosses Tony Khan Support her in addressing her health issues.

“I want to thank Tony Khan and AEW for supporting me during my medical journey,” Brooks said through tears. “This is an unheard of blessing and I thank you from the bottom of my heart and thank you all for your prayers.”

She asked fans to remember her, saying: “Please continue to pray for a safe journey and a safe death. I love you all.”

Brooks has received strong support from wrestlers signed to AEW and its rival WWE, including the former WWE Women’s Champion Jed Cargill Wrote her, “Sending you all the love. I’m praying for you, rebel.”
