Google he announced Thursday that it will begin rolling out Gemini to cars with Google, which marks a major upgrade from Google Assistant. The move reflects Google’s push to bring more advanced, interactive AI to cars.
This announcement follows closely on the heels of news from General Motorswho to be revealed yesterday that Gemini is coming to about 4 million cars from the year 2022 and new, like Cadillac, Chevrolet, Buick, and GMC. However, today’s announcement did not name specific automakers, meaning that Gemini will not be limited to GM vehicles.
The release will begin in the US with English language support, with availability expanding in the coming months. In particular, Gemini is not only reserved for new cars, but also for existing cars through software updates.
Cars with Google were first launched in 2020. Now, according to Google, the new Gemini update supports a natural, conversational way for drivers to interact with their cars.
In the near future, drivers will be able to speak freely to complete tasks, explore ideas, or get information. For example, a driver may say they want to stop for lunch at a low-end restaurant with outdoor seating in their driveway. Gemini can pull the right suggestions using data from Google Maps, then ask follow-up questions such as car availability or menus, including their favorite foods.
Gemini can also complete tasks such as turning on the heat, providing directions, playing music, accessing vehicle information, summarizing incoming messages, and helping drivers respond hands-free.
Additionally, there’s Gemini Live, which is currently in beta and allows for free, real-time conversations. Drivers can activate it by pressing the display button or saying, “Hey Google, let’s talk,” and enable conversation, learning, or casual conversation while driving.

Google says it plans to expand Gemini support to other languages and regions. Future updates are also expected to expand integration with services such as Gmail, Google Calendar, and Google Home.
