On Tuesday, April 28, Emi’s (Gianna Lee Ortiz) father, Victor (David Zayas), was killed after being imprisoned. Shocking twist ends season 1 while teasing RJ (Scott Speedman) may be encountered in the second season.
“Victor was designed to disappear in the ninth and final episode, which is what it looks like to us — I don’t know when we decided that. It was probably the midpoint of our season and it felt right,” creator Robert Dougherty told us TV Insider. “This feels like a nice punctuation mark at the end of our various storylines in season one.”

Scott Speedman has transitioned from Grey’s Anatomy to a long-running role as RJ Decker — but who does this and other actors play? Based on the novel Double Whammy by Carl Hiaasen, RJ Decker focuses on a disgraced newspaper photographer and ex-con who “restarts his career as a private eye (…).”
“I would reconsider after we cast David Zayas, he’s an incredible person and actor,” he continued. “He was so much fun to watch and interact with. In my book, he was television royalty. Ultimately though, we have to say goodbye to Victor, but we will miss David.”
While Doherty didn’t reveal who killed Victor, he hinted at the consequences, adding, “I think the people closest to him are going to have to find themselves under a magnifying glass. I think Amy in the finale was part of a cabal to take him down. If you look at it from another angle, it might look like she was working against him, and maybe that’s what it is. Certain groups might believe that Amy was involved in what happened.”
He continued: “In addition to that, as we mentioned in the finale, Victor admitted to being a shady politician, which I’ve heard is a very rare thing. But he admitted to Amy that he had relationships with a lot of people that he shouldn’t have on paper, but he thought it was for the greater good. Interest. It makes Fort Lauderdale a safer city, it makes Florida a safer state. So we have to pick our way out of some of those people. “Of course, who was Victor sleeping with and could they take him out? “

“I think it’s a good thing for us as writers to be dramatic. It’s good to be able to experience this kind of surprise and tragedy. It’s going to damage Emi and RJ’s relationship, not only because they could, will, and should be considered suspects, but Emi will be carrying some guilt,” he detailed. “She didn’t see this coming, but the fact is that she prepared him for his arrest and that arrest made him a vulnerability for other people, people to be identified.”
The second season will also follow Emi’s reaction. “As smart as Amy is, this is the one thing she couldn’t have foreseen and she has to choose her own way through it,” he elaborated. “I think it’s going to make it harder to be with RJ, at least in the short term. Not because she blames him, but because it’s hard to look at RJ and not think about the path that ultimately led to her father being shot dead in their home.”
