Spotify’s next frontier: fitness


After adding podcasts, audio books, movieand even physical booksSpotify on Monday announced its next big category: fitness.

The company is building its reputation as a powerhouse of fitness playlists to become the home of your workout. To do this, Spotify has partnered with a number of health and fitness equipment manufacturers, Peloton.

Exercises from these providers can be found from the new “Fitness” section within the app, or by typing the word “fitness” into the search box. Content, such as music and videos, will be available across all Spotify apps on mobile, desktop, and TV.

At launch, free and Premium users will have access to playlists and extensive training from the creators of Yoga With Kassandra, Caitlin K’eli Yoga, Sweaty Studio, Chloe Ting, Pilates Body By Raven, Abi Mills Wellness, Sophiereidfit, and others.

Meanwhile, the partnership with Peloton brings more than 1,400 ad-free classes, on demand from its many popular instructors to Spotify’s Premium users in select markets. The site includes several classes such as those that focus on strength, cardio, yoga, meditation, running, and more, without the need for special Peloton equipment.

Currently, the game is available in English, with some options in Spanish and German. They can be downloaded for offline access.

Participating producers will benefit from the partnership by being able to use Spotify’s monetization tools, such as the Spotify Partner Program. However, the company refused to share its partnership with Peloton. In the future, the company may consider other ways to generate revenue, but cannot guarantee whether these will include things like paid subscriptions or paid classes.

Spotify says that its decision to invest in fitness was based on a lot from users, since about 70% of its Premium subscribers are active on a monthly basis, and over 150 million plays on the game. The company also saw the importance of workout music after the recent launch of its AI-powered Prompted Playlist feature.

However, the addition of another version of what used to be a music-only app could be a turn-off for users who already feel that the app has become too cluttered as the company has evolved into a new format. But Spotify seems to be thinking about their experience, too: For example, it in the near future option to turn off videos across the program.
