France is confirming a data breach at the government agency that manages citizens’ IDs

The French government, which oversees the production and management of citizenship documents, including IDs, passports, and immigration documents, confirmed on Wednesday that it had suffered a data breach.

In a to announceThe Agence Nationale des Titres Sécurisés (ANTS) said information stolen in the breach may include full names, dates and places of birth, postal and email addresses, and phone numbers for an anonymous number of citizens. ANTS said the investigation is to determine how and why the breach occurred, and the people whose data was affected are being notified.

ANTS, which said it became aware of the incident on April 15, did not say how many people were affected by the breach. But other reports suggest that millions may have had some of their assets stolen.

According to Bleeping ComputerThe hacker announced the hack on a social media platform, claiming to have a database of 19 million users. The hacker’s website reported the same type of hacking as described in the ANTS announcement and was published before ANTS revealed it on April 20.
