Google adapts Workspace to make AI your new intern in the office

At Google Cloud Next this week, the tech giant announced a new update to Workspace, which is based on professional subscriptions. As you might expect, the update is heavy on AI, including new tools for a variety of automations — everything from writing emails to organizing Google Sheets. All in all, the changes are clearly designed to give office workers confidence in their limited work.

Here are some of the new features:

Workspace Intelligence. Workspace Intelligence, a new AI system built into Google Office, it is designed to support a variety of tasks. The system supports a person’s Workspace data, including Gmail, Calendar, Chat, and Drive (Docs, Slides, and Sheets). Google has given users the power to control what the AI system can see and access. Users can restrict Workspace Intelligence access to specific features at any time. The tradeoff: the more a system can access, the more effective it is in the same environment.

Create and fill out Google Sheets with Gemini. Several new features allow users to create and populate Google Sheets, the company’s spreadsheet tool. Users can create cards by encouraging Gemini to create them. Languages can include things like formatting and data retrieval, allowing Google’s AI machine to do more of what a human would have had to do in the past. At the same time, Gemini also helps in data entry, Autofill Forms and “quick” filling. Google says its new feature allows users to fill out spreadsheets “9x faster” than manual input, because the system is designed to describe what you want to input. Someone a new form of Papers allows users to convert unstructured data into structured tables.

AI typing ability. Google has also introduced something new new AI writing tools in Google Docs. Users can now use Gemini to “create, write, and clean up” documents. This feature is powered by the company’s Workspace Intelligence system, which takes data from a person’s Drive, Chat, and Gmail archives, as well as the Internet, to help manage tasks. Users simply recommend Gemini to help them write or edit their posts. Users can prompt Gemini to “help me write” or ask it to “match” their writing so that they can better imitate their words.

Realizing that business customers and where the money is, technology companies are racing to deliver the simplest and most efficient office equipment – services that can make a worker’s life easier. Google has another advantage; Its office products are already firmly established in workplaces around the world, giving them a receptive audience for these AI upgrades. But Microsoft, Apple, and the growing startup sector are all competing on the same page.
