Anthropic he announced On Monday, Amazon agreed to invest $5 billion in new capital, bringing Amazon’s total investment in the company to $13 billion. Anthropic, for its part, has agreed to spend more than $100 billion on AWS over the next 10 years, acquiring up to 5 GW of new computing power to train and run Claude.
The deal is similar to Amazon’s deal with OpenAI two months ago, when it teamed up with a $110 billion round – offering $ 50 billion – which valued the creator of ChatGPT at a value of $ 730 billion. This service, too, is designed in part as a cloud service rather than a straight investment.
At the heart of the deal are Amazon’s chips: Graviton (low-power CPU) and Trainium (Nvidia’s competitor and AI accelerator chip). The Anthropic Alliance mainly covers Trainium2 through Trainium4 chips, although Trainium4 chips are not currently available. The latest chip, Trainium3, was released in December. On top of that, Anthropic has secured an opportunity to buy Amazon’s future chips when they become available.
We’ll see if these stories are funny enough for Anthropic to announce new funding. VCs have reportedly been providing capital to an AI company in a potential deal its value is $800 billion or more.
