Friday, April 10, on the Apple TV series Ed (Joel Kinnaman) died along with his grandson Alex. (Sean Kaufman) beside him. Although the show’s cast has gone through numerous cast changes over the years, Kinnaman, 46, has been a main character since the first season.
Kaufman, 26, gives exclusive interview US Weekly Talking about being in the room for key moments, he said: “My favorite part about the show is that even though there are all these stunts in every episode and it’s so vast about the nature of the solar system, the constant exploration, the CGI and the planets, it’s a very grounded drama. It’s about family relationships, platonic and romantic relationships, and everyday life. Being able to focus on that is really my favorite part.”

“Ed’s passing was a very emotional moment. I had the pleasure of working with Joel and shooting that scene with him, it was very powerful,” Kaufman said with us. “I see this man who has spent his entire life working on this show, who is obviously connected to this cast and crew, is family, and for it to actually come to an end. It’s so emotional. I have no choice but to feel overwhelmed.”

“Being able to be in that scene and have him transfer that feeling to me felt very impactful to me,” he notes. “There was a scene we shot earlier and I was a little nervous. We were talking about it. At the end of the scene, after I reported it, he just looked at me silently in his old man makeup and he just nodded and gave me a thumbs up. I’ll never forget it.”

He concluded: “Because for me, that’s the moment I knew he believed in me. That’s a really powerful thing and I use it a lot on the show because it’s like, ‘Okay, now it’s my turn to shape my future on the show. I have to believe in myself just like he believes in me.'”
