high potential Season 3 is coming back – but not everyone will be returning after the cast unexpectedly exits.
The hit ABC series, premiering in September 2024, follows Morgan (Caitlin Olson), a high-potential intellectual who works with the Los Angeles Police Department to help the department solve murders. Morgan and Karadek team up (Daniel Sunjata), initially skeptical About her ability to assist Homicide, but eventually came to rely on her.
Before season 2 wraps up in April 2026, sources say showrunners Todd Hasson exited the show originally created by Drew Goddard. The pilot was written by Goddard, who is expected to co-write Sarah Esberg/Rob Thomas/Dan Etheridge/Pierre Laugier/Anthony Lanclet/Jean Neckeric and Alicia Jones.
Thomas, meanwhile, is expected to serve as showrunner before exiting in June 2024, months before the show premieres. Hasson was eventually announced as the new showrunner, who also serves as executive producer.
Hazen teased the vision for the series while speaking US Weekly January 2026.
“It’s been quite a bumpy ride. We’re going to start unraveling some pretty intense things with Morgan as it relates to everything in Rome,” he said at the time. “Kids go through all kinds of trials and tribulations at home. Things just get confusing and complicated – hopefully keeping viewers on edge in the best possible way.”
He concluded: “As we get into the second half of season two, our job now is to fill in some big gaps and develop some relationships. You’re going to see some intense stuff happen between Steve Howie’s character and Captain Wagner that really starts to bloom in the second half. It creates a bit of a soap opera in a number of ways. That’s just our normal mode of just trying to mix things up and keep the audience engaged and keep them guessing.”
However, the biggest suspense is Was Wagner (Steve Howie) Live or die during an actor’s exit from the show.
Keep scrolling to see which high potential The stars who returned for season three also didn’t return:
There wouldn’t be High Potential without Morgan, so it’s safe to say that Kaitlyn Olsen will be back for season three.
Karadek’s love life takes a hit in season 2, so look forward to seeing how This is addressed on screen.
Javicia Leslie’s character Daphne is set to return for more episodes of the hit ABC show.
As Daphne solves more cases, her partner Oz is expected to be by her side.
Judy Reyes is pulling double duty on The Anatomy and High Potential Season 2, so there’s no doubt she’ll be back as well.
Ava is getting a bigger role in the show, as her missing father Roman appears to have appeared in the Season 2 finale.
Like Ava, Morgan’s son Elliot will play a major role in season three.
Howie Join the crime drama in June 2025 as a year-long series regular. His character was eventually shot and killed in the season two finale. This – combined with the actor appearing in other shows during the same period – hints that he’s exiting for good, but it’s unclear what will happen to Wagner.
Taran Killam is expected to return in Season 3 as Morgan’s ex (and half-brother).
Mekhi Phifer joined Season 2 as a friend of Roman’s, but it’s unclear if he will return.
